    École Sir John Franklin High School is a learner-centered school offering a wide selection of courses designed for and responsive to students' needs. The school is Dedicated to Excellence of mind, body and spirit. We offer exploration in the academics, arts, athletics and applied learnings. We nurture healthy choices through early morning and after-school fitness and wellness programs. Alternate times for learning are provided through such programs as after-school art and music, Sunday drama, evening Skills Clubs in Culinary Arts, Auto and Web Design, and Night School which runs 4 evenings per week. For students destined for the workplace, there are school-to-work transition as well as apprenticeship program opportunities. All students registered at Sir John can choose from rich variety of co-curricular programs and clubs.

    If you are using the kettle in the student services area, please make sure that you unplug them when you are finished using it.  Leaving it plugged in is a fire hazard.

     

    VALENTINE’S DAY

    Candy Grams- Buy a candy gram and send it to a friend.  On sale at lunch in the foyer.  All proceeds go to Canadian AIDS Research and they will be delivered Friday during period 1.

    Spirit Day- Wear Red and Pink on Friday to celebrate this day of love!

    Bake Sale- Support Student Council and buy a heart-shaped cookie for yourself or a friend.

    “Stealing Hearts” Contest- Someone will be around to your period 1 class to teach you how to play, so be on time and you could win a great prize!

    DREAMCATCHERS

    CARIBOU CARNIVAL

    FRANCE-ITALY TRIP

    Are you interested in being part of a SASA group here at Sir John?  Would you like to learn leadership skills so as to bring education and information about substance abuse to other students?  Would you like the opportunity to work with a team of students to create a video/dramatic presentation with the possibility of travelling to other schools?  If so, please bring your lunch and come to an information meeting this Tuesday @ 11:45 in the Student Support Area, or see Ms. Bowden for further details.

    SCHOOL WRESTLING

    This is the final month for the school wrestling program.  Practises will be changed from the regular Monday and Wednesday dates to Tuesday 3:45pm and Fridays 3:45pm.  See Burly if you need more information.

     

    PE LEADERSHIP OR CALM HOURS

    Students wishing to earn either PE leadership or CALM hours have an opportunity to score keep or ref the noon hour intramural basketball competitions.  See Mr. Shearme or the supervising teacher during intramurals for information on this event.

    Students wishing to earn either PE Leadership or CALM hours have an opportunity to score keep or do various other duties for the upcoming Senior Cager which will take place at the end of February (Feb. 25th-28th).  There will be a sign up sheet for score keeping the games posted on Mr. Burlington’s gym door a few days before the Senior Cager event.

     

    LPI EXAM

    Registration for students attending BC Colleges and Universities.  Grade 12 students planning on attending post secondary school in BC maybe required to write the LPI Language Exam.  If you have applied to college or university in BC, check to see if you need to write this exam.  Sir John will be hosting this exam on April 8th.  Students must be registered to write.  Register on-line at www.lpi.ubc.ca.  Please see Ms. Monkman if you have any questions.  Registration deadline is March 5th.

     

    GRADE 12 ADVISORY PROJECTS

    All potential grads are reminded that they are required to submit two projects for their final Advisory credit.  Ms. Monkman and Ms. Bowden are currently accepting the Independent Living projects, so be sure to submit this ASAP if you have not done so already.  The second Advisory project is the Portfolio project, and these are due in April.  This is a friendly reminder that these two projects are required if you are planning to graduate in June.  Please see Ms. Monkman or Ms. Bowden if you have any questions about these projects.

     

    THE SEARS CANADIAN HIGH SCHOOL DESIGN COMPETITION

    This competition is open to all high school students. The aim of this competition is to promote the study and awareness of various design disciplines in schools across Canada. Prizes will be awarded for four categories- Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Architectural/Interior Design and Graphic Design.  For more information you can contact Katie Weber at 1-416-216-2138.

     

    SPAIN 2010

    Our first cultural session will be on Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm in the Foods Room.  All travellers must attend.  The school nurse will also be there to talk about health issues when travelling.

     

    All travellers must have their new signed consent forms into Ms. Cartwright by Wednesday at 3:30.  If you do not have the new form, see Ms. Cartwright now.

     

    SJET MEETING

    The next SJET meeting will be Tuesday February 9th, in Ms. Johnson’s room (room 31) at 11:30.  ALL TRAVELLERS MUST BE THERE to listen to the Health Nurse.  Tips for the driver and guide will also be collected.

    The Canadian College of Performing Arts is holding auditions in February and March, 2010 for classes commencing next September.  For more information and registration, check posters around the school, contact 250-595-9970 or email admin@ccpacanada.com.

    ECE-CKLB STUDENT REPORTERS PROPOSAL

    CKLB and ECE are proposing to partner on an Aboriginal Student Achievement initiative called My Report,  My Community.  This exciting opportunity will see NWT youth acting as local “on-location” reporters for CKLB.  This is to provide youth from across the NWWT an opportunity to develop media literacy skills and an avenue to have their voices heard.  For more information come to the office and speak with Mercie.

     

    CANADIAN NAVY CENTENNIAL NATIONAL ESSAY CONTEST

    Grade 9-12 students across Canada are invited to participate in the Centennial of the Canadian Navy through a nationwide Essay-Poetry-Art contest.  There will be a winner from each province and territory.  Winners will receive a scholarship of $2000 with the overall winner receiving an additional $3000.  For submission forms, please see Ms. Malkin or Mrs. Chiasson in the office, Mr. Kowalzik in Rm 36, Miss Michel in Rm 41 or Mrs. Wilcox in Rm 14.  Contest deadline is March 31st, 10.

     

    2010 ABORIGINAL WRITING CHALLENGE

    Are you between the ages of 14-18 or 19-29?  Send in a short story and showcase your heritage.  See Mrs. Cleary for more details.  Deadline is March 31, 10.

    are offering twenty awards of $5000 each to graduation students from across Canada who have achieved excellence in academic and extra curricular activities, and demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the environment.  A national winner will also receive a Panasonic notebook computer and a National Award.
