Cosmetology Lab
On February 19th, the new Cosmetology Lab was opened at Sir John Franklin High School. This was the first day of classes in this new facility and the instructor (Alexis Saunders) and the students were pretty excited about the brand new equipment and supplies that were ready to be unpacked. The artificial nails and polish that were in the boxes were fun and colourful and the girls were looking forward to having the chance to use them all. Because they had all chosen to be in this class, all the students were happy that they had the opportunity to work in such a great classroom. The students will be ready very soon to practice on “real” models. An official opening of this lab will be held after Spring Break. Â

Arctic Energy Alliance Hiring
The Arctic Energy Alliance is interested in hiring three Yellowknife high school students to work on a telephone survey they will be conducing in late February and the first three weeks of March. Students must be capable of working independently and have an interest in issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The students would be expected to work up to 50 hours over the course of about four weeks at a pay rate of $18 per hour. The students would work three or four evenings a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in our AEA office (101 - 5102 51st St.) under the supervision of Shuang-Yi Wang, a co-op student from the University of Alberta who is working on this project for us. The telephone survey is designed by Tait Communications to determine what NWT residents know about the Arctic Energy Alliance and the services they provide, and get a basic picture of their energy practices.
For more information, or to apply, contact Brad Heath: Brad.Heath@aea.nt.ca (e), 867-920-8943 (p).

“The Johnny’s” Entertain SJF Students
The Johnny’s played in the Sir John gym on Friday, January 30th. Despite a power outage, the show went on to be enjoyed by all. From the band’s bio: “The Johnny’s pride themselves on bashing out short, rapid-fire anthems. Their high-octane garage punk invites crowds to a blitz of sweaty, frenzied dancing. Let the good times rock’n’roll! Singer/songwriter Veronica Johnny hails from the sub-arctic community of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada. Cree, Chipeywan, Ojibwa, and Mohawk bloodlines percolate proudly through her veins.”
